New words start “hot”. Hot words are reviewed frequently.

“Cold” words are reviewed periodically, enough to retain them in long-term memory.

As you review a word more and more, its temperature gets cooler. But you can adjust its temperature anytime. Having trouble with a particular word? Swipe up on it to make it hotter. Know a word very well? Swipe down to make it colder or even freeze it.
